Choosing the right bedding / sofa bed
Having trouble waking up this morning? Sleep deprivation is a scourge that affects thousands of people on a daily basis. The cause is often unsuitable or faulty bedding. So you need to choose the best possible bed or sofa-bed to get the best possible sleep! But how do you choose your mattress? What criteria should you take into account to make the right choice? Mobilier de France gives you the answers.
How to choose a mattress
There are many factors to consider when choosing a mattress. Mobilier de France explains everything you need to know, from bed dimensions and suspension to filling and sleeping independence.
Suspension, support, welcome
There are three main points to consider when choosing a mattress :
- Suspension is probably the most important criterion. There are three types: foam, latex and sprung:
- Latex mattresses can be natural or synthetic. It offers the possibility of creating several comfort zones on the same mattress, and benefits from excellent ventilation thanks to its perforated cells.
- Polyurethane foam, which is denser than latex, offers greater firmness and better long-term resistance. It should be distinguished from closed-cell polyether foam, often used for entry-level beds. The latter is preferred for less regular use.
- Ventilation is undoubtedly the strong point of innerspring mattresses. There are several types of springs: continuous, conical or pocketed. Pocket springs are the most recent, and offer the best possible sleeping independence - an essential criterion when choosing a mattress.
- It's body support, or firmness, that plays a major part in whether or not sleepers experience back pain. Support can be soft or firm, and depends on the user's build and height. For example, if you're between 1.70 and 1.80 m tall, you should opt for a very firm mattress if you weigh between 100 and 110 kg, but prefer a soft mattress if you weigh between 60 and 70 kg.
- The cushioning, or filling, is the first thing your body comes into contact with when you lie down. How do you choose a mattress based on its filling? Simply take into account the material it's made of: wool, cotton or even silk. The better the quality of the material, the more comfortable your sleep. Blood circulation is improved, you toss and turn less, and you spend more time resting during the night.
Zoom in on dimensions
Compared to previous generations, we're bigger now! That's why today's beds are adapted to the times. One of the most important factors in choosing a mattress is its size. You can opt for standard or made-to-measure mattresses, but note that the more space you have in your bed, the greater your comfort. This is especially true for couples, who need twice as much space:
- People of size XS can opt for beds with dimensions between 70x190 and 80x200 cm.
- A person of size S or M can choose either 90x190 or 90x200 beds.
- L sizes should opt for 100x190 beds.
- Sizes XL should choose a 120x190 bed.
- For size S or M couples, you'll need at least a 140x190 bed.
- These dimensions can be extended to 140x200 or 160x200 for an L-size couple.
- Count on 180x200 or 190x200 beds for XL couples.
What is sleeping independence?
Sleeping independence is essential for couples. When one of the two sleepers tosses and turns a lot during the night, it can disturb his or her partner. In this case, the bed's sleeping independence is not optimal. This is a major problem, since the average person tosses and turns about forty times a night - just as many opportunities to be woken up and reduce the quality of your sleep!
How do you choose a mattress with regard to sleep independence? You need to refer to the suspension, to which it is directly linked. The best sleeping independence is provided by a pocket-spring mattress.
What about the base?
Choosing the right mattress isn't the only thing to consider when changing bedding. The slatted or sprung base is also important, as it comes in two different forms:
- Choose a slatted base if you've purchased a spring or foam mattress. Slats provide support for the mattress and are extremely durable. You won't have to change the slatted base when you decide to change the mattress. However, you will need a rigid base for a spring mattress (which already provides good suspension), and a softer base for a foam model.
- You can't use a sprung base with a foam mattress. If you combine it with a spring mattress, you'll enjoy exceptional comfort. However, if you decide to change your mattress, the box spring will have to go with it, which means additional expense.
