Combining mismatched chairs: the dining room trend

If there's one trend that's been getting a lot of attention in recent months, it's mismatched chairs in the dining room. In decorating magazines or even in advertisements, it's absolutely impossible to have missed this trend. The good news is that, while some fashions are not always easy to apply at home, this one is perfectly feasible in any dining room! Here are a few tips on how to give in to the mismatched-chair trend.

The different types of chair

When it comes to decorating, the possibilities are endless for many objects, and this is even truer for chairs. From the must-have Scandinavian chair, to bistro, country, modern Plexiglas, comfortable fabric, trendy cane, rough wood, colorful, industrial.... In short, there are many styles and many names for many chair models. So it's not always easy to see clearly, but it's worth looking into the matter if you want to make the right associations.

Matching mismatched chairs

It may seem like a paradox, but opting for mismatched chairs means finding a certain harmony between the different models. Of course, the table itself needs to be taken into consideration, not only in terms of style, color and material, but also in terms of the amount of space it offers, if only to know how many chairs you're going to be able to afford.

To start slowly, it's perfectly possible to personalize your current setup. Keep four matching chairs on either side of the table, but add two different models at either end. This is an excellent way to give in to the mismatched-chair trend without having to change all your seats, and see if the style suits your interior. If you're still on the fence about mismatched chairs, you can simply opt for the same model in different colors, which will add color to the room and make the result less uniform. For example, you could opt for a mix of shades of blue and green to keep up with the trend, or go for something more original with terracotta and pink, which have also been very popular colors in recent months.

If you want to take the plunge completely, you'll need to find a certain harmony between the different models, in terms of materials, for example, by opting for different shades of wood and models of different shapes. You could also opt for chairs in light wood and pastel colors, to be revived with one or two models in brighter colors. You can also vary between different materials or juggle old and new for a more eclectic look.

Be careful, however, not to overdo it and stick the chairs together. The eye needs to be able to read a room easily, and mismatched chairs are bound to add more information to the decor. Making sure there's enough space between each chair will make the decor easier to read.

What's more, mismatched seating isn't restricted to chairs: it's also possible to opt for a bench on one side of the table, for example, and this is a very trendy choice that we've seen a lot of in recent months.

Make the rest of the dining room work with this choice

Opting for mismatched chairs is an excellent choice if you want to follow the trend, but you'll have to be careful that the rest of the dining room works with this new decoration. Indeed, if you have a tendency to accumulate decorative objects without necessarily having them work together, it's likely to do a lot with mismatched chairs. This doesn't mean that the rest of the dining room decor should be uncluttered, but rather that it should harmonize with the central space. For example, a sideboard or china cabinet might be a good match for one of the chairs, whether in style, material or color.

Decorative objects should also be trendy and modern. In short, it must be understood that mismatched chairs are a decorative choice, not a nonsense. To achieve this result, few tricks can be provided, as it's the overall impression of the room that will be the best indicator. So don't hesitate to try out different combinations to see what works best.

In addition, certain decorative objects are crucial to the success of the decor. The choice of light fixture above the table, for example, needs to be sufficiently modern and trendy to catch the eye. If you decide to opt for a rug under the table, you'll need to be careful that the patterns don't add too much information, and above all that they match the chairs chosen. Finally, the right amount of light is obviously essential, as is the presence of plants to brighten up the space even more and make it even warmer.

In short, opting for mismatched chairs around your dining room table is not such a simple option. Careful thought needs to be given to the different models, and the rest of the decoration needs to harmonize with them.
