A carpet for every room

Whether it's a kitchen, a bedroom (for adults or children) or a living room, or even a dining room, you won't make the same choices when it comes to floor mats. When choosing a carpet, it's important to consider its usefulness, and therefore the maintenance required.

Bathroom mats

The first thing to remember is that it's not just the colors, but also and above all the materials, that will make the difference.

It seems obvious that the mat you choose for a bathroom should be made of a terrycloth textile material. The aim is to have an accessory that is both decorative and useful, enabling you to absorb water on the floor and dry it easily.

In this respect, the choice of a bathroom rug also implies not opting for a light shade. Other options include plastic (PVC or polypropylene) or bamboo bathroom mats.

Kitchen mats

In the kitchen, a rug can be used to define a space that opens onto the dining area. It also needs to be easy to clean. Peelings and splashes are often the order of the day in the food preparation area.

Choose either a cotton or plastic mat, especially if you're placing it in front of your sink. If you have small children or spend a lot of time in the kitchen, preparing meals or cleaning, then plastic is undoubtedly the easiest material to maintain. A simple wipe with a sponge or damp cloth is all it takes to clean your carpet.

So, PVC carpet, vinyl carpet or polypropylene carpet? It's up to you to choose the type of carpet that suits you best. What's more, you can find both plain and printed carpets.

Generally speaking, it seems essential to think about matching the shade(s) of your carpet to the floor. For example, if you have white tiles, you won't make the same choice as for a room with parquet flooring.

How to choose the right carpet size?

There is a standard format for rugs. In fact, we can categorize the different types of carpet on the market as small, medium and large.

Small carpet
Designed for bathrooms, kitchens, entrances to rooms or even small spaces, small carpets are usually 70x140cm.

This does not include long, narrow formats that are perfect for hallways. In some cases, a small-to-moderate sized rug can also be chosen for a modestly sized bedroom. In this case, a 90x160 format may be suitable.

Medium-sized rugs
For living rooms and bedrooms, we usually recommend a 120x180, 140x200 or 170x240 rug. It decorates without completely "eating up" the existing floor.

Large rugs
When it comes to rug dimensions, you can find rugs measuring 200x300cm and more, depending on the situation. In fact, some specialist stores offer XXL floor mats.

A must when you're lucky enough to have a very large space. The choice of color and style is more important than ever.

At Mobilier de France you can create your own made-to-measure rug! Small, medium or large, you choose the dimensions of your choice. Ask our in-store advisors for more information.

How to care for your carpet

Depending on the type of tasks you're faced with, you won't opt for the same option.

On the one hand, it seems essential to carry out regular cleaning, to rid your carpet of dust and dust mites. On the other hand, if you have pets that have access to the interior of the house, you'll need to be extra careful.

Now that you've got all these things in mind, you're ready to choose the carpet that will brighten up your living room, finish off your bedroom decor or dress up your entrance.

How to revive the colors of a carpet?

For natural, chemical-free carpet care, baking soda is the ideal solution.

In fact, one of Grandma's recipes for maintaining and reviving the color of a carpet is to coat it with soda water. If there are stains, you can scrub with a soft brush.

After letting the carpet dry for about 30 minutes, sprinkle it with baking soda. Wait for the powder to dry, then vacuum.

Processing a task

Your beautiful carpet is stained? Don't panic, there are several tricks you can use to clean up the scene of the crime:

  • Shaving foam: Without further ado, draw out your shaving foam. Apply the product to the spot in question (in a thick layer), leave to work and rub in.

  • The soda water and baking soda combo: If the soda water trick has never really worked after a table stain on your favorite dress, combined with baking soda it's frighteningly effective. Apply soda water to the carpet with a sponge, brush gently and leave to dry for 30 minutes. Then sprinkle with baking soda and, once dry, vacuum.

  • Terre de Sommières: This powdered clay is a powerful ally in tackling the toughest stains. Fluid, it slips perfectly into all carpet fibers. Sprinkle generously over the stain, leave for two hours, brush and finish with a final vacuum.
